University overhaul wins backing at Holyrood

A controversial overhaul of university governance in Scotland has been passed by MSPs at Holyrood.

The Higher Education Governance Bill sets out plans for elected chairs, modernised governing bodies and academic boards, as well as an enhanced definition of academic freedom.

It has prompted concerns among university bosses that their autonomy could be compromised and Education secretary Angela Constance has already introduced changes to water down the Bill.

The move has been welcomed by union leaders who will now get a seat on university courts and say the move will “improve participation in decision-making and ultimately improve the lives of students in Scotland”.

Labour joined with the SNP to pass the Bill.
