Ukip's Steven Woolfe '˜sick of croissants' in French hospital

Steven Woolfe may be recovering from the altercation with a fellow MEP which left him in hospital, but the Ukip man is not enjoying his enforced diet of continental fare.

After visiting him in hospital in Strasbourg, his colleague Nathan Gill said Mr Woolfe was in “good form” but keen to return home after being told he was being kept in for another 48 hours for observation.

“He is sick of croissants and is looking forward to having a full English breakfast,” Mr Gill said.

Leadership favourite Woolfe has “reached out the hand of friendship” to the fellow MEP involved in the altercation, according to Mr Gill.

He added that Mr Woolfe accepted that “things did go too far” during his confrontation with Mike Hookem in the European Parliament on Thursday.

Mr Gill told reporters that while Mr Woolfe was recovering well, he was being kept in hospital for a further 48 hours as a precautionary measure.

“It was at one stage touch and go,” he said.

The Ukip MEP involved in the altercation which left leadership contender Steven Woolfe in hospital has said he acted in self-defence.

Mike Hookem said the confrontation in the European Parliament in Strasbourg had amounted to no more than a “scuffle”.

In an interview with BBC Radio Humberside, he “categorically” denied throwing any punches at Mr Woolfe and insisted he was not responsible for his injuries.
