Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum following the death of Alex Salmond at the age of 69.

The former first minister, who led the SNP in the 1990s and again between 2004 and 2014, died suddenly on Saturday of a suspected heart attack at a conference in North Macedonia, shocking the political world.

He drove the SNP to astonishing electoral success during his time in charge, eventually securing 2014’s historic independence referendum. The Yes side may have lost by 45 per cent to 55 per cent, but the aftermath reshaped Scottish politics.

In recent years, the fallout from sexual harassment claims made against him has cast a shadow over his legacy. Mr Salmond was cleared of all criminal charges following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh in 2020.
