STUC calls for debate on independence referendum to be ‘opened up’

The STUC have warned that the debate around the independence referendum is “too important” to be left to politicians.

It wants to widen discussion in the run-up to the expected vote in 2014 and members are being urged to back a consultation over summer along with other civic and community organisations, and how Scotland can deliver economic “justice”, equality, industrial democracy and social protection.

General secretary Grahame Smith said: “The increasingly febrile debate on Scotland’s constitutional future and two flawed consultation processes prove that the referendum question is too important to be left to the politicians.

“That is why STUC is launching a major consultation over the summer and early autumn which will involve our own members as well as Scotland’s communities in asking the questions that matter.

“What Scotland do we want to see and what is the best way to get it?”

First Minister Alex Salmond wants the referendum to be held in autumn 2014 and has suggested asking a second question on enhanced devolution, short of independence. He also wants the vote extended to people as young as 16. Prime Minister David Cameron wants a single question ballot held sooner.
