SNP stirring up anti-Englishness - John Major

SIR John Major yesterday accused the SNP of holding the referendum around the 700th anniversary of Bannockburn in an attempt to stir-up anti-Englishness.

The former leader also warned a narrow No victory could increase division. He made the remarks during a Scottish Political Journalists’ Association lunch in Edinburgh. He also said giving more powers to Scotland after a No vote would have to be reflected by changing the relationship between Westminster and other devolved parliaments.

SNP MSP Stewart Maxwell said: “John Major is perfectly entitled to his view, but his comments are woefully out of touch.”
