SNP MSP Bill Kidd nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

AN SNP politician has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of his campaign work on banning nuclear weapons.

Anniesland MSP Bill Kidd, who is the co-president of a global nuclear disarmament group, pushed for a Holyrood vote on Scotland backing a ban on nuclear weapons.

Dr Aytuğ Atıcı, a member of Turkey’s Republican People’s Party (CHP). nominated the 700-member Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (PNND) group for the prize, highlighting Mr Kidd’s efforts as part of the nomination.

A statement read: “PNND co-president Bill Kidd has moved the Scottish Parliament to vote overwhelmingly in favour of banning nuclear weapons from Scotland, including the UK nuclear weapons deployed on submarines based in Faslane.”

Mr Kidd said it was a ‘real honour’ to be included in the nomination, adding: “More important is the recognition of the work done by parliamentarians around the world to oppose nuclear weapons, including the renewal of Trident.

“The SNP have always been resolute to our opposition to nuclear weapons. Our commitment is not just to a nuclear free Scotland but to a nuclear free world.

“PNND play an important role in building a global network in favour of nuclear disarmament and it is a privilege to be a part of that.”

Other Nobel Peace Prize nominees include US presidential hopeful Donald Trump, Pope Francis and Edward Snowden.
