Scottish independence: Will Scots living in England be able to vote in the referendum?

No. The UK Government proposed that the Holyrood franchise should be used which means there is no vote for anybody living outside Scotland.

However, foreign citizens from the European Union and Commonwealth will have the vote in an independent Scotland as long as they are resident. They are only excluded from Westminster elections not regional or local elections.

Controversially, the franchise chosen also means that Scots who serve the UK in the British armed forces will also be denied a vote in the referendum unless they are based in Scotland.

It is understood that some people who live outside Scotland are registering themselves at the homes of friends and family to make sure they get a vote.
