Scottish independence: ‘Respect the result’ - PM

DAVID CAMERON last night said all sides should respect the referendum No vote saying he ­believed the matter had been settled for at least a generation.

In a BBC interview, the Prime Minister also said the UK parties’ promise to deliver more powers for the Scottish Parliament would be kept.

He was speaking after SNP leader-in-waiting Nicola Sturgeon said it was a question of “when” not “if” Scotland would become independent.

Mr Cameron said: “There was a referendum. There was very clear result – a margin of around 11 points – and as Alex Salmond said before the referendum that would settle it for a generation, or he said possibly a lifetime.

“I think the right thing to do is accept the result and now deliver the extra devolution, the extra powers to the Scottish Parliament that all three of the UK wide parties promised and that’s exactly what we will do.”

He accepted some would try to resurrect their independence dream, but urged them to help secure stronger devolution.

“This question has been settled,” he said. “Now, of course, we live in a free country and people will inevitably try and put it back on the agenda.”
