Scottish independence: Miliband ‘solidarity’ appeal

ED Miliband appealed to Scots to vote to remain in the UK as he talked about “solidarity across our whole country” as the Labour leader said he would spend the bulk of the remainder of the campaign in Scotland.

Mr Miliband, in a speech to supporters in Cumernauld, said he wanted to make the case for independence from the “head, heart and soul”.

The Labour leader also evoked his late father - the writer Ralph Miliband - who served in the Royal Navy in Scotland during the Second World War.

Mr Miliband, who said he would spend the rest of the week north of the border, called on Scots to vote for “a different future.Solidarity. Social Justice.Together, not alone. From the head From the heart.From the soul.”

The Labour leader’s delivered his speech just hours after Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott was loudly barracked by Yes campaigners during a bad tempered campaign event in Rutherglen, when he was give a police escort to a cafe.
