Scottish independence count ‘properly scrutinised’

THE chief counting officer has refuted claims of vote rigging in the independence referendum, saying all 32 counts were “properly conducted and scrutinised”.

More than 89,000 people have signed an online petition demanding a “revote” after claiming that video evidence showed irregularities in the process on Thursday night.

The petition, on Change.org, reads: “Countless evidences of fraud during the recent Scottish Referendum have come to light, including two counts of votes being moved in bulk into a No pile, Yes votes clearly being seen in No piles and strange occurrences with dual fire alarms and clear cut fraud in Glasgow. We demand a revote.”

Ten votes in Glasgow are already being investigated in connection with a separate claim of multiple voting.

A spokesman for Mary Pitcaithly, the chief counting ­officer, said the Electoral Commission would handle any complaints. He said the only recourse for complainants was to take the vote to judicial review.

The spokesman said: “The chief counting officer is satisfied that all counts throughout Scotland were properly conducted and scrutinised.”
