Scottish Conservatives sued over '˜MEP stick up'

The Scottish Conservatives face legal action following an alleged 'stitch up' by Ruth Davidson.

It has been reported that the Scottish Conservatives face action following a row over who should represent the party in Brussels.

A writ has been served by Belinda Don after she was looked over in her attempt to become a Scottish Conservative MEP.

Critics have claimed that the decision was a deliberate snub by the party’s leader, Ruth Davidson.

The move comes after Ian Duncan, the current MEP for Scotland, was given a place at the House of Lords, meaning he would need to give up his Brussels role.

Belinda Don, who was the new candidate on the party list, the system used to elect MEPs, was looked over in favour of Iain McGill despite being further down the party list.

Ms Don refused to comment on the legal challenge stating that she was “currently in discussion with the party regarding obeying order of the European list.”

A Scottish Conservative spokesman said that the writ had been served but the party was unable to comment.

Ian Duncan had failed in his bid to become an MP after losing to the SNP incumbent by 21 votes in Perth and North Perthshire two weeks ago.

It is understood that in 2011, Belinda Don opposed Ruth Davidson becoming Scottish party leader.
