Scotland independence: Singapore ‘good model’

Scotland should model itself on Singapore in terms of marketing itself to outside investment in the event of a Yes vote - Sir Martin Sorrell has claimed.

The chief executive of advertising giant WPP, whose clients have included Ford, Unilever and Procter & Gamble, said the south east Asian country was regarded as one of the easiest places to do business - and suggested that Scotland should take lessons in marketing from how Singapore has presented itself to the international business community.

“From a sort of marketing, trade and investment point of view, I think [an independent Scotland] would mirror Singapore,” he said.

But he warned that questions remain over the future of independence.

“I think the very interesting thing that [the referendum] raises [is] what are Scottish foreign relations going to look like?” Sorrell asked. “Who is the lender of last resort? Will the Bank of England still be the lender of last resort? Will there be an equivalent in Scotland? I mean, it is a very complex situation.”
