Rishi Sunak will preside over a tumultuous time for the union as Nicola Sturgeon is pushing for a second Scottish independence referendum in 2023. Here’s what the MP for Richmond has said about Scotland in the past.
9. On the Scottish Government
In the House of Commons in June 2022, the SNP's Alison Thewliss asked if then Chancellor Rishi Sunak would increase funding to the Scottish devolved government after a real terms cut of 5% from its budget. Mr Sunak said: "What’s clear is that in spite of the largest increase in public spending in the UK for some decades... the Scottish Government are now imposing austerity." Photo: Jonathan Brady
10. Creating jobs
In his leadership campaign, Rishi Sunak has said he wants to lead a Government "willing to roll up their sleeves and get stuck into creating jobs, growth and prosperity in all corners of the UK, from Llandudno to Perth, Belfast to Birmingham". Photo: JUSTIN TALLIS
