Rights of Children and Young People

This aims to enshrine in law Scottish ministers’ duty to have due regard to the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child when exercising their responsibilities.

It intends to spell out basic human rights of children up to the age of 18. A consultation on the bill begins today. It was welcomed by Save the Children as a “landmark” moment.

Although the details have yet to be finalised, the bill could include measures focusing on child protection, as well as a child’s right to education and a healthy home life.
