Reform poll clash fears

A REFERENDUM on reform of the Westminster voting system is expected to be held on the same day as the Scottish Parliament elections next year.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg is to announce the date for the referendum next week.

But if it coincides with the Holyrood elections on 5 May next year, there are fears it could overshadow the Scottish Parliament vote.

Welsh Assembly and English council elections will also take place on the same day.

A referendum on moving from first-past-the-post to the alternative vote was a key Liberal Democrat demand in their coalition tallks with the Tories.
