Power cut hits parliament

Parts of central Edinburgh – including the Scottish Parliament – were hit by a short power cut yesterday, which was caused by a cable fault.

Properties and businesses in Broughton, St Andrew Square, Leith Walk and parts of the Old Town were cut off at around 2pm.

Scottish Power said the faulty cable had now been repaired.

Parliament switched to its standby generator shortly after 2pm, with Deputy Presiding Officer John Scott telling the chamber: “Scottish Power advise interruptions to their customers may continue until 4.30pm.

“To avoid further disruptions the decision was taken at 2.15pm to switch to our standby generator.

“This should ensure business is able to proceed today with no further disruption.”

Scottish Power apologised to its customers for any inconvenience.
