Poll: Scots split on another indyref in five years

Almost half of Scots oppose holding another referendum on independence over the next five years, a new poll has found.

But just over a third of people would support another vote on the country’s constitutional future, according to the YouGov survey commissioned by Scotland in Union.

Nicola Sturgeon has yet to confirm if she will campaign in this May’s Holyrood election with a pledge to hold another referendum.

Today’s poll finds 46.5 per cent would oppose this, 36 per cent are in favour, 12 per cent are neither in favour nor against, while the rest don’t know.

Scotland in Union, set up to campaign for Scotland’s place in the UK, wants all of the political parties to rule out a referendum over the next five-year team of parliament.

Director Alastair Cameron said: “It’s becoming increasing clear that Scotland wants to move on from the constitutional question which has dominated Scottish politics for the last few years.

“The majority of Scots do not support another referendum in the next Scottish Parliament and we are calling on all of the political leaders to categorically rule this out. The current Scottish Government has hinted that it will leave the option open with certain triggers and we believe this uncertainty would be bad for Scotland.”
