Poll: Majority of Scots back Nicola Sturgeon during pandemic, SNP voting intention up

The latest poll found if an election held tomorrow the SNP would secure over half of all votes.

Nicola Sturgeon’s leadership and handling of the Covid-19 crisis has the support of a significant majority of Scots, a new poll has found.

The results published by YouGov reveal three-quarters (74 per cent) of the Scottish public think Ms Sturgeon’s government is doing a good job.

The SNP Government also has cross-party support, with 70 per cent of both Labour and Conservative voters supporting their handling of the crisis.

However, when it comes to the UK Government’s handling of the coronavirus crisis, the pollsters found that Scots are split, with 47 per cent saying they’re handling it well vs 48 per cent badly.

A notable contrast to south of the border, where 59 per cent of English adults back Boris Johnson’s administration and its handling of the pandemic compared to only 35 per cent who think it is handling it badly.

The approval also transfers to Nicola Sturgeon, with 71 per cent of Scots having confidence in her making the right decisions around the coronavirus outbreak.

This compares to just 40% of Scots who say the same of Boris Johnson.

SNP voting intention

The survey of 1,095 adults asked respondents ‘if a general election is held tomorrow, which party would you vote for?’ The nationalists were found to be on track to secure just over half (51 per cent) of all votes. If this came to fruition the SNP would see an increase on the 45 per cent achieved in December’s Westminster poll.

YouGov’s analysis stated: “While the Conservatives have seen a voting intention boost in Britain as a whole as a result of the coronavirus crisis, in Scotland it is the SNP who appear to be the biggest beneficiaries of any ‘rallying to the flag’.

”Our latest figures find that if there was a general election tomorrow the SNP would get just over half of all votes (51 per cent), six points higher than they achieved in the election last December. The Conservatives are on 25 per cent, while Labour is in third on 15 per cent.”
