Police investigating hackers ‘revenge porn’ attack

POLICE are investigating after intimate images of 25 women were stolen by hackers and posted on the internet.

Police say 25 photographs of woman were shared.

Details of the case were revealed by Detective Chief Superintendent Lesley Boal during a discussion of so-called revenge porn during the Scottish Parliament’s justice committee today.

The incident affected women living in such a small area of the country that police said revealing further details of where it took place was likely to identify the victims.

Chief Inspector Scott Tees, Police Scotland Safer Communities said: “Inquiries are still ongoing into these incidents, it would be inappropriate to comment further.

“Police Scotland is committed to building safer virtual communities and we use a range of investigative techniques, including new technologies, and work with agencies both national and international to identify and prevent criminals exploiting and abusing people through use of the internet.”

He added: “There are steps people can take to stay safe online and to prevent them becoming victims of hackers including keeping internet security up to date, changing passwords, keep personal information private and not sharing security information. And before posting anything online make sure you are happy for it to be shared - once something is online it stays online and you have no control over how it is used.

“Anyone with concerns that they may have been hacked or that images may have been shared online should phone Police Scotland on 101.”
