Pharmacists’ caring role could grow

PHARMACISTS’ role in helping care for people could be developed, Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has said.

Ms Sturgeon spoke as it was announced a review is to be carried out into the part pharmacists play in contributing to the healthcare of patients in the community.

There are about 4,500 pharmacists across Scotland, who are experts in medicines and can often be the first people patients turn to for help on health issues.

Since 2006 they have become increasing involved in providing direct patient care by, for example, providing advice for smokers wishing to quit.

Ms Sturgeon said: “Pharmacists play an increasingly important role in the direct care of patients. As pharmaceutical drugs grow in complexity, it is essential our pharmacists, who are experts in medicines, work in partnership with GPs and others, to ensure patients receive the best results from their treatment and that adverse effects are minimised.”
