An independent campaign was launched in favour of the Bill which the MSP had raised at Holyrood and will come before Holyrood’s health committee later this year.

It will now be taken forward by Green leader Patrick Harvie.

‘My Life, My Death, My Choice’ is led by the Humanist Society Scotland and FATE (Friends at the End) who are asking members of the public to urge their MSPs to vote in favour of a change in the law when the bill goes before parliament.

Bob Scott, spokesperson for My Life, My Death, My Choice said: “Public support for a change in the law is at an all-time high and this issue is very much something that needs to be looked at closely.

“We launched the campaign on the back of the poll results which showed there was a large amount of support for the Assisted Suicide Bill in Scotland. However, we have been heartened by the strength of feeling and number of people who feel that this should now become law.”

A poll conducted in January 2014 showed that 69 per cent of Scots backed the proposed legislation, which would give people suffering from terminal or life-shortening conditions the legal right to obtain assistance to end their life in certain circumstances, with only 13 per cent of Scots opposing such a change.
