MSPs call for prisoners to work nine to five

PRISONERS should experience nine-to-five days to prepare them for work after release and be offered money in return for attending training and rehabilitation, MSPs have said.

The Scottish Parliament’s justice committee has called for greater focus on ensuring inmates take part in meaningful activity while incarcerated.

They could also have the amount of time they watch TV limited, and have their school reports given to prison bosses to inform their educational timetable.

The Scottish Prison Service pays up to £12 an hour for some work parties but only £4.80 for educational courses.

Committee convener Christine Grahame said: “There should be better access for short-term prisoners to activities and a focus on the broader range of skills which can equip a prisoner for life after release.”
