MSP Mitchell asks ‘Who’s sorry now?’

A CONSERVATIVE MSP wants to create an “apology law” to encourage large organisations to say sorry without the fear of litigation.

Margaret Mitchell said her plan would bring “closure” to families who have been wronged by bodies such as the NHS or local authorities.

She also argues the move would save public cash by reducing the need for long investigations into complaints by the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman. Ms Mitchell said: “Every MSP will have had the experience of speaking to constituents who have not had an incident dealt with properly by an organisation like the NHS or a local council.

“Often all they are seeking is an apology to gain closure however, it is the fear of litigation which often prevents an apology, so if the meaning was changed to an expression of regret, that would change.”
