Ms Lennon, who was first elected to the Scottish Parliament in 2016, made the decision just hours before the midnight deadline. She is believed to have the backing of at least six current Scottish Labour MSPs.

The leadership election opens for nominations tomorrow, but her colleague Anas Sarwar is the only other elected politician who has declared they will run for the post.

Whoever wins will be the tenth Scottish Labour leader since the advent of the Scottish Parliament, as the latest leader to resign, Richard Leonard, bowed out last Thursday just four months from the elections.

Ms Lennon, who is best known for piloting the ground-breaking Period Products Bill through Holyrood, said: “Following extensive discussions with party members, I have decided to put my name forward to lead the Scottish Labour Party.

“This is an important time for our country and it is vital that Scottish Labour continues to play a positive and constructive role during the pandemic response.

“The Scottish Parliament election will be a key moment in our democracy, when we decide what a Covid-19 recovery should look like. Scottish Labour Party members deserve to have their say about the best way to take forward our vision for a fairer and more equal Scotland.”

Her competitor Anas Sarwar said he looked forward to “a friendly and positive campaign” and thanked those who have already declared their support for him.

The winner will be announced on February 27.
