Mexican government praises Scots for Trump flag protest

THE Mexican government has praised Scots for confronting Donald Trump with flags of the North American nation.

Opponents of the US tycoon started flying Mexican flags near his Aberdeenshire golf course.

Trump caused outrage around the world by branding Mexican immigrants to the US as “bringing drugs, crime and rapists”.

Today the Mexican embassy in London issued a statement ahead of Trump’s arrival in Scotland.

Referring to the planting of Mexican flags, a spokesman said: “As far as we understand, it is a spontaneous gesture from Scottish people in solidarity with the Mexican immigrant community in the U.S., which contributes everyday with their hard and honest work to the prosperity of North America.

“Mexican Government has been very firm in condemning political rhetoric, bigotry, intolerance and misinformation about our country and its community in the U.S.

“Scottish people seem to be aware that in the U.S, the Mexican community is part of the solution, not part of the problem.”

The comments come as presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton sent a personal message to Scottish protesters telling them: “We know how you feel.”

Posting a video to her Twitter page, the 68-year-old highlighted Trump’s unpopularity in Scotland and the UK.

She said: “People in Scotland are not thrilled about Trump coming to their country. We know the feeling.”
