Labour candidate faces referendum assault charge

A LABOUR candidate and former council leader is due in court in Glasgow today, charged with assaulting a woman on the day of the Scottish independence referendum.

Marie Rimmer, who will contest the St Helens South seat, denies assaulting a woman at a polling station in Shettleston as she and Labour colleagues campaigned for a No vote in the referendum.

The 67-year-old will stand trial at Glasgow’s Sheriff Court today.

The court date comes less than two months before the general election.

Labour has said they are looking ‘very seriously at the allegations’ but confirmed they would stand by their candidate.

The alleged assault is said to have happened at Shettleston Community Centre in Amulree Street at around 1pm on Thursday September 18.

Rimmer was arrested by police at the scene.
