Labour asks what devo max means

ALEX Salmond has been asked to explain exactly what a “devo max” constitutional settlement would mean.Labour’s Jim Murphy said phrases such as “devo max” and “indie lite” were “lovely”, but “it was not quite clear what they mean”.

The shadow defence secretary was reacting to Mr Salmond’s indication that a devo max or independent-lite option would be on the independence referendum ballot paper – giving voters the chance to vote for more Holyrood powers short of outright independence.

Devo max would see all financial powers transferred to Holyrood, but foreign affairs and defence retained by Westminster. Mr Salmond believes it is up to his opponents to precisely define of devo max.

Yesterday the First Minister said: “I am not for limiting choices of the Scottish people, I’ll leave that to Westminster politicians. I am confident we will win the referendum.”
