It is not right to ‘look on the bright side’ of global warming

A COMMITTEE supposedly made up of experts should be able to do better than this. It’s worthwhile to set out ways Scotland will have to adapt to rising sea levels, weather disruption and environmental vulnerabilities, but it’s absurd and irresponsible for Lord Krebs to place so much emphasis on the notion of benefits.

Perhaps most disturbing is the idea that melting polar icecaps are good news for Scotland because it brings new trade opportunities. In fact, easier access to the Arctic is leading to a surge of exploration for oil in dangerous but previously inaccessible waters, aggravating climate change and risking pristine ecosystems.

It’s a profound disappointment to see a supposedly independent advisory body being so complacent.

Scotland has a winter sports industry, with slopes that appeal to skiers and snowboarders from across the UK and from further afield.

This report should focus on practical recommendations on how to prepare for more frequent flooding, for the expected northerly spread of pests and diseases, and for the impact of climate change on vulnerable ecosystems.
