The former Daily Mirror editor tweeted to his 4.2m followers: “OK, Scotland, you’ve had your fun. Now just quietly vote ‘NO’ and we’ll say no more about it.”

It prompted a host of responses from pro-independence tweeters, with user @BryanMcGill81 telling the chat show host: “That’ll just get more folk voting Yes” and @cosworthlady asking: “Why do you want to keep us?”

The 49-year-old responded to some criticism, telling one user to ‘settle down ya bampot’ after being sent a tweet saying: “From the bottom of my heart, I hope you die soon.”

Morgan’s intervention comes just a day after historian Dan Snow launched the ‘Let’s Stay Together’ campaign, with over 200 celebrities including June Sarpong, Stephen Hawking and Kriss Akabusi signing a letter begging Scotland not to vote to leave the Union.
