Hundreds tune in to first council webcast

HUNDREDS of viewers tuned in to the first city council webcast, with figures of 611 far higher than expected.

Proceedings of the September meeting were broadcast online – and a snap survey found 84 per cent of viewers reporting a greater understanding of how decisions are made.

The main item on the future of Leith Waterworld included a speech from community group Splashback, which is seeking to take over the running of the site. A vote resulted in the group being given until January to improve their business case.

Council insiders suggested viewing figures were far higher than expected, despite a relatively uncontroversial agenda. Upcoming debates on Portobello High School, in October, could attract thousands of viewers.

“A bit of a revelation,” viewer Colin McEwan wrote on Twitter. “They are not the bunch of morons received wisdom would have us think.”
