Holyrood hosts UN focus on Middle East

FORMER British ambassador to the United Nations Sir Jeremy Greenstock is among senior figures taking part in a conference at the Scottish Parliament today on the Middle East.

The one-day event, organised by the United Nations Association UK and sponsored by Edinburgh North and Leith Labour MSP Malcolm Chisholm, was focusing on the theme “A Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction: the challenges”.

Topics were expected to include the removal of tactical nuclear bombs from Nato’s south Turkey base, and the disarmament of Israel’s nuclear weapons and any that Iran may possess.

Delegates from Turkey, Finland, Syria, Egypt, Russia, Palestine, Qatar and Israel were due to take part.
