‘Green roofs’ may help cut flooding, say experts

THE havoc caused by floods could be reduced by techniques such as building “green roofs” and rainwater collectors and slowing down rainwater flow from roads, scientists will tell the Scottish Parliament today.

Researchers at Abertay University will cite two major studies to highlight techniques which could mitigate the effects of rainstorms in urban areas.

Flooding has caused major disruption in recent months. Greenock experienced severe flooding in July and Fife and Angus saw properties damaged due to heavy rain last month.

Researchers said they aimed to deal with stormwater by slowing down the flow of water; reducing pollutants and providing amenity for recreation
 and biodiversity to the community.
