Green MSP in bid for college rector's post

GREEN MSP Mark Ballard is the first candidate to put his name forward for the Edinburgh University rectorial elections.

Mr Ballard was asked to stand for the post by student environmental organisation People and Planet.

If successful in the vote, which takes place in February, the MSP will follow in the footsteps of colleague Robin Harper, who held the post from 2000 to 2003, and other famous names including William Gladstone, Gordon Brown, Magnus Magnusson and Alexander Fleming.

Former Linlithgow MP and current rector Tam Dalyell will stand down next year.

Mr Ballard said: "I am delighted to have been asked to stand as Rector of Edinburgh University. As a former Edinburgh University student, I always enjoy going back. I remember when Muriel Gray and Donnie Munro were rectors and I was there when Munro made his rectorial address to the students. I never imagined there would be a chance I would be in that position myself."

Student Union president Ruth Cameron added: "I am delighted to have our first candidate confirmed for Rector. A very high standard has been set. Mark is really popular with students, very active and hands on, and is always supportive of our campaigns."
