Former trade chief dies at 90

LORD Cockfield, the trade secretary under Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s and later vice-president of the European Commission, has died, aged 90.

Seen as one of the principal architects of the European single market, he was also said to be one of the greatest authorities of his generation on taxation.
