Edinburgh Provost writes letter to twin city Nice

The Lord Provost of '¨Edinburgh the Rt Hon Donald Wilson offered his sympathies to the people of Nice and said he is writing a letter of '¨sympathy to the Mayor of Nice, a city with which Edinburgh is twinned.

In a statement issued in the wake of the attack Mr Wilson said: “On behalf of all of the people of Edinburgh, our thoughts are with the citizens of Nice and the rest of France.

“It is all the more heartfelt for Edinburgh as Nice is one of our twin cities, which we have had a special relationship with since 1958.

“I will be formally sending a letter of sympathy to the French Consul General but words can hardly do justice in the wake of such an horrific attack. Our heartfelt condolences are with people of Nice and the families of all those who have died and are injured.

“The flags flying above Edinburgh City Chambers have been lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect and support for all those affected.”

Last November following the terrorist attacks in Paris flags at the City Chambers were also flown at half-mast. Speaking at the time Mr Wilson stressed that people from a wide variety of faiths, or none, condemned the attacks.

“On behalf of all of the people of Edinburgh, regardless of faith or belief, our thoughts are with France at this awful time of great, great sadness. This was an attack on
civilisation.”
