The Devolution Unit now appears to be part of an anti-independence drive at Westminster. It has emerged the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), which runs the unit, has contacted overseas governments about this September’s referendum in a bid to find allies who might oppose independence.

Officials at the FCO had been in touch with officials in the United States, New Zealand, China, Russia and a number of European Union nations.

A newspaper reported that telegrams to FCO posts suggested Westminster papers on the problems which could be faced across the UK if Scotland went independent be circulated “ASAP to host governments”.
