David Cameron ‘would not quit’ following Yes vote

The Conservative leader is reportedly resolute in his conviction that he will remain should Scotland opt to leave the United Kingdom.

Senior Tories say Cameron would face pressure to quit following a Yes vote and that his position, after granting permission for a referendum, would become untenable.

However other souces close to David Cameron point to the fact that Better Together is a cross-party organisation meaning the blame for a No vote would not lie solely at the Prime Minister’s door.

Today’s reports contrast with Cameron’s announcement that he would stand down should he lose the referendum on the UK remaining within the European Union in 2017.

A poll in the Scotland on Sunday last month found that the pro-independence camp needed a swing of just over 2 per cent to win the vote on September 18.

The ICM survey found a decline in the No vote from 46 per cent to 42 per cent over the past month. Over the same period, the Yes vote has remained steady at 39 per cent, resulting in a significant tightening of the gap between the two sides.
