FORMER Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander is set to relocate to Beijing to take up a post at the new Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank

Alexander was previously MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey before losing his seat to the SNP in May’s general election and was a key member of the coalition government.

The former Liberal Democrat parliamentarian is reported to have been nominated for the role by Chancellor George Osborne.

Britain and Germany are to be represented on the new AIIB board with Alexander tipped to secure the position of vice-president.

The Treasury said it did not comment on speculation about appointments to international institutions, but added: “The UK has been a leading supporter of the AIIB from the outset, playing a significant part in the establishment of the bank, including as the first G7 country to join the bank.”
