Cross-party support for fur farm cruelty motion

A MOTION against fur cruelty tabled at Westminster by Livingston Labour MP Graeme Morrice has attracted cross-party support from more than 100 fellow MPs.

The motion highlights film evidence of extreme animal cruelty in Chinese fur farms and calls for the UK Government to press the Chinese authorities to take action to stop the cruelty. It also calls on the European Union to improve labelling of fur products imported into the UK and the rest of Europe to give consumers real choice over whether or not to buy these products.

The issue was originally raised with Mr Morrice by Livingston resident Maureen Bishop.

Mr Morrice said: “I am delighted that this motion has received such widespread support amongst MPs.

“The horrendous cruelty taking place in Chinese fur farms is clearly an issue which strikes a chord with both MPs and the public, and I will be seeking an opportunity to host a debate on it in parliament early in the New Year.

“The success of this motion also demonstrates how an issue brought to my attention by a single constituent can make a big impact in parliament and hopefully help to bring about positive change on an issue.”

Ms Bishop added: “I hope the interest generated by Graeme’s motion will increase pressure on the Chinese authorities to take action on improving animal welfare.”
