Cardinal Keith O’Brien brands same-sex marriage an ‘aberration’

The head of the Catholic Church in Scotland has branded same sex marriage an “aberration” and said it would lead to further “immorality” in society.

The Scottish Government is currently consulting on plans to introduce the measure, while the UK Government is preparing to launch its own consultation.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien said it would be the “thin end of the wedge”, comparing it to the legalisation of abortion in 1967.

“Further aberrations would be taking place and society would be degenerating even further than it has into immorality,” he said today.

“It is changing the whole notion of what marriage and what a family is. Children have the right to have a mother and a father.”

The cardinal said change would take the accepted definition of marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman and turn it on its head.

“I do not accept the fact that one can re-define the word ‘marriage’ to mean something that it has never meant before,” he added.
