Brussels explosions: What we know so far

HERE is what we know so far about the terror attacks in Brussels on Tuesday.

• There were two explosions at Brussels Airport at around 7am UK time

• About an hour later, around 8.10am UK time, there was an explosion on a Metro train at Maelbeek station, near the city’s EU quarter

• The death toll is placed, at the moment, between 31 and 34. Fourteen people are reported to have been killed at the airport and up to 20 in the explosion on the Metro

• The attacks are believed to have injured between 170 and 200 people. Of those, at least one person is British and was injured at the airport, Downing Street said

• The attack at the airport targeted an American Airlines desk

• One or two Kalashnikov rifles were found in the airport departure lounge after the attacks and at least one suitcase bomb exploded there, security officials are reported to have said

• The injuries sustained by a number of victims indicate there were nails in at least one of the bombs at the airport. Leuven-based Marc Decramer told local media the Gatshuisberg hospital is treating 11 people for wounds likely caused by flying glass and nails

• The Islamic State terror group (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying they opened fire in the airport and ‘several’ members detonated suicide belts. IS said a suicide bomber was also responsible for the Metro attack

• There are reports that a suicide vest was recovered from the airport, and that an unexploded bomb was destroyed

• Belgian authorities have released CCTV image of three men suspected of being involved in the airport attacks

• Two Scots narrowly avoided being caught up in the blasts - Andrew Bowie’s wife narrowly avoided the Maelbeek blast while Michael Park decided to take the Eurostar instead of a flight and so was still in the centre of Brussels at the time of the airport blasts

• A 15-strong delegation from the Scottish Conservative Women’s Council and 12 students from the University of St Andrews, due to visit the European Parliament, are safe and well

• UK prime minister David Cameron has advised Britons against ‘all but essential travel’ to Brussels
