The film-maker, 41, made the remark shortly after his father pleaded with Scots to vote No in September’s independence referendum.

He said: “I’d trust Samond far more if he grew a long beard and spoke from a cave. Might help if he just fired an AK into the air occasionally.”

Jones, who directed the critically acclaimed sci-fi thrillers Source Code and Moon, was caught up in the independence debate after a statement released by David Bowie, read out by model Kate Moss when she accepted a Brit Award on Bowie’s behalf, urged Scots to stay in the UK.

SNP MSP Graeme Day called the tweet “outrageous”, saying: “The First Minister is a democratic politician who should not be likened to a murdering terrorist.”
