Bankruptcy rates hitting Scots cities and towns

SCOTTISH towns and cities are being hit by rising personal insolvencies, according to a new study.

Analysis by the Experian Group showed the highest concentration of personal insolvencies was in Scottish urban areas – with Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Motherwell recording the worst figures last year.

The relatively high level of insolvencies found in Scotland was in contrast to the UK as a whole, which is on a downward trend.

Clydebank was found to be the highest when it came to increasing personal insolvencies. Experian compared the number of insolvencies in 2011 with the figure for 2012, expressing them as a percentage of the total number in the UK.

Clydebank accounted for 0.61 per cent in 2011, rising to 0.84 per cent the following year. It was followed by Glasgow central, rising from 0.75 per cent to 0.94 per cent. When it came to the greatest concentration of insolvencies, Edinburgh was in the lead with 1.52 per cent of the UK total, followed by Dundee with 1.23 per cent.
