Glasgow City Council area is home to 592,820 people served by the Royal Infirmary, Victoria Infirmary, Gartnavel and Stobhill hospitals, Western Infirmary, Yorkhill, Southern General.

Over the years, the low life expectancies recorded in the impoverished East End have caused much concern. The council and health authorities have made efforts to help the homeless and those struggling with addictions.

Much research is being done into the “Glasgow effect”, the poor health experienced that cannot be explained by socio-economic circumstances.
