Respect MP George Galloway said: “His achievements are an Everest, in sporting terms. I think he is a shoo-in for the Lords.”

Meanwhile the president of the amateur football club where Sir Alex and his successor at Old Trafford, David Moyes, both played in their youth has said he believes Moyes had been groomed for the job at United.

Jimmy Wood – of Drumchapel Amateurs FC in Duntocher, near Glasgow – said Moyes would be fulfilling his destiny by working at Old Trafford.

He said: “Fergie and Moyes are so similar and they were trained with the same discipline.

“Maybe now Fergie has some spare time he can come up and help with training. He’s a great guy, but is a bit grumpy sometimes.”
