A police spokesperson said: "We received reports on Saturday 11 July 2026 relating to a post made online.

"Following further assessment, a 50-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection.

"A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."

Police had initially said no criminality had been established in relation to the comments, but then confirmed the case was under investigation.

The social media post was made before Ms Widdecombe’s death was being treated as an alleged murder.

Former MEP Ms Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor, Devon, last Thursday.

A 28-year-old white British man arrested in South Yorkshire on Saturday remains in custody.

Aberdeen University previously said it was urgently reviewing the social media comments.

“The comments that have been shared are entirely the individual’s own and do not represent the views of the University of Aberdeen,” it said in a statement.

“We do not condone violence or hateful behaviour in any form. We are co-operating with Police Scotland as they carry out their inquiries and cannot comment further.”
