Aberdeen council HQ graffiti solution found

ABERDEEN City Council may have finally found a solution to removing the graffiti which has defaced the frontage of the authority’s headquarters at historic Marischal College, it was revealed today.

A Police Scotland investigation was launched in June after the words “Ye have not yet done as ye ought”. were daubed in large letters along the front of the building. A 23 year-old male has since appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, charged with malicious mischief.

A spokesman for Aberdeen City Council said today that it was hoped the proposed solution could allow the graffiti to be removed without damaging the building itself.

He said: “A test removal of a small section of the graffiti earlier this week has shown promising results.

He continued: “Efforts will be made early next week to remove the graffiti in the section nearest to Greyfriars, employing the services of a Glasgow-based graffiti-removal firm. The graffiti is not being removed chemically or by ‘sandblasting’ but by using a scouring technique with aggregate to remove the paint.

“If this removal is successful, the rest of the graffiti will be removed in the coming weeks - assuming dry weather. We estimate each section could take two to four hours to complete.”
