700 Scots jobs to be axed at Rolls Royce aerospace plant

Aerospace giant Rolls Royce has unveiled plans to axe 700 jobs at its plant in Inchinnan in Renfrewshire.

Nicola Sturgeon today branded the news "absolutely devastating" and pledged the Scottish Government would work unions and other parties in an effort to save the plant.

The job losses, more than half of the plant's 1300 workforce, would come from its services division at the factory.

But Rolls Royce is also looking at ditching its services capability from the site.

Ms Sturgeon told MSPs today: "The news that the workers at Rolls Royce in Inchinnan will have got this morning is absolutely devastating and my thoughts are very much with all of them and their families

"The Scottish Government will continue to do everything it possibly can to get a more positive outcome to this.

"These jobs are important, the Rolls Royce facility is important and of course advanced manufacturing is very important in terms of the Scottish economy now and in the future."

Fiona Hyslop, the Economy Secretary, has been tasked with co-ordinating a cross-party approach to help save jobs at the plant.

The First Minister added that "all options" for financial interventions from the Government will be considered within state aid constraints.

"We always look for ways in which we can protect jobs and protect important manufacturing facilities like this."
