Political leaders pay their last respects to Betty Ford

FORMER President George W Bush, first lady Michelle Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former first ladies Nancy Reagan and Rosalynn Carter were among those who attended a service for Betty Ford in California.

Mrs Ford was thrust into the White House when Richard Nixon resigned on 9 August, 1974, and her husband, then vice-president, assumed the presidency. Although she always said she never expected nor wanted to be first lady, she quickly embraced the role.
