The fraud involves users receiving an email claiming to be from ‘The Virgin Media Team’ and headed ‘Your Virgin Media billing details are incomplete’.

It goes on to state that the recipient’s details are either incomplete or out of date and that a date for disconnection has been set.

However upon selecting the ‘click here’ section it goes on to ask the users email and password before the next section which asks for bank details.

Police Scotland have contacted Virgin Media who have confirmed that it is indeed a scam and are asking any customers who receive this email report it.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We are issuing a safety warning following reports of a scam involving a letter purporting to be from Virgin Media.

“Anyone who receives a similar email should not provide their bank details, but report it to http://netreport.virginmedia.com/netreport/.”
